“Antiques, Collectibles, and More!”
Capt. Scrap is currently owned and operated by Kathleen O'Neill. The building was originally purchased in 1987 by Kathleen's brother Michael and their father Dan O'Neill. Since Michael is a carpenter the original idea was to build furniture and crafts to sell to the general public but it was soon noticed that a hardware store was needed in the town. Michael's interest in antique furniture and collectibles led to the construction of a pole barn in the back yard where such goods were sold while hardware was still being sold in the main building. The store was run this way for many years until there was a decline in sales due to the creation of chain hardware stores. The main building was slowly being turned into an antiques and collectibles store but a road trip to Colorado by Kathleen and her mother Lillian to pick up Kathleen's son who was stranded after the 9/11/2001 attack led to the belief that the store could be operated as strictly an antique and collectibles shop with quality dealers. There are quite a few co-op's off the roadways between New Jersey and Colorado! Kathleen helped to convince her father that all antiques and collectibles was a good idea and Dan (a born salesman, but not by trade) proceeded to fill all the buildings with wonderful people, many of whom are still in the store today filling their areas with the treasures they find. The name Captain Scrap came from Michael's business partner at the time that came up with the name for Dan because he was often seen around Michael's construction sites picking up leftover materials to build new things. Dan also created art work with found or leftover objects. Dan is no longer with us but he is forever in his family's and friend's hearts.
