“free camping with the bison”
Bison often wander through this primitive campground, located on the west side of the park's North Unit, near the Badlands Wilderness Area. Access is located off of the Sage Creek Rim Road, an unpaved road that may temporarily close after winter storms and spring rains. The road provides limited turnarounds for large recreational vehicles. Camping is free of charge. Pit toilets and covered picnic tables are available, but no water is available on-site. Sites at the Sage Creek Campground are available on a first-come, first-served basis and rarely fill to capacity. A portion of the Sage Creek Campground is designated for horse use.
Best campground ever! Free, extremely off the beaten path. Nice sunrise, great people.
Bring plenty of water and don't forget the sunset at middle up, 200ft mile hike.
Met so many great friends here just by helping set up tents. Bring your own toilet paper, trust me.
Cheers, Rigs
Just beautiful. It was a long bumpy road to the camp ground but so worth it. Get there at a decent time and roam around the site. Amazing views all around! You hear the animals at dusk which is awesome and the stars are completely unreal at night. Have binoculars because bison and big horn sheep may come into sight during your stay
Stayed here twice. Bison go right through campground at night. Great hills to climb to see them roaming around. Second time though the wind was so hard our tent poles broke. Still recommend it. Take in your own water.
The pit toilets are not gross. Make the trip down the gravel roads. We saw dancing spiders, bison, prairie dogs, mountain goats, and heard lots of noises.
We stayed in July 2016. Awesome campground! Get there early if you want a good spot, it fills up VERY fast and there are only a few picnic tables available. Definitely worth the drive! We didn't see any bison, but we did see a big horn sheep and tons of prairie dogs! Also, coyotes howl as soon as the sun goes down. Beautiful sunrise. We will definitely return next time we're in SD!!
place was great was very hot out but not the fault of the place the only downsize was road in and out is very very rough on car very washboard.
Great campsite. Beautiful, free and full of wild life. I highly recommend.
We didn't stay here but I could tell it was beautiful. By the time we got there it was raining so bad that we were soaked in minutes. The ground hadn't absorbed any of the rain yet so we couldn't set up our tent. Any chance of rain? I wouldn't stay here unless I had a camper. No chance of rain? I can't wait to try it again! Had we beaten the rain, it would have been fine. Even though I didn't stay over night, still giving a 5 star review. Mother Nature can't chance my mind. You can't beat free with a beautiful drive there and Bison roaming around nearby!
Amazing campground. Camping with bison was an awesome experience!
This is a wonderful place to stay with my family .
