“most complete antebellum railroad repair facility still in existence”
Located at the old Central of Georgia Railway Savannah Shops and Terminal Facilities, Georgia State Railroad Museum is a stunning National Historic Landmark that is part of a National Historic Landmark District. Enjoy a close-up view of the fully operational turntable, learn about the many historic railcars and rolling stock on display, and experience the handcar with the help of a knowledgeable and friendly historic interpreter. Check the schedule for train ride dates and times, which rotate between the No. 30 steam locomotive built in 1913, and the 'modern' No. 119 diesel locomotive built in 1947... Either way you won't want to miss a ride into Savannah - and the country's - past. Georgia State Railroad Museum is believed to be the largest and most complete antebellum railroad repair facility still in existence, in the world! Georgia State Railroad Museum offers an array of daily programming. From guided tours of the Museum's office cars and rolling stock to nostalgic train rides, and occasional turntable and blacksmithing demonstrations, there is always something exciting to do and see!
This was an exciting spot to visit. The staff was awesome and so knowledgeable about everything. When we went we bought the "See 3 Pass" this is a discounted ticket that will get you into 3 of 5 historical spots, that are run by the city, around the Savannah area. They are: Savanna History Museum, Savannah Children's Museum, Georgia State Railroad Museum, Old Fort Jackson, and Pinpoint Heritage Museum. The pass is also good for 3 days and you can go back to those sites as many times as you want during those days.
Don't miss this one train fans. One of the few historic roundhouse assemblies still in tact. Interesting tours included with admission. Get on board!!
