“one of the most unusual museums”
The Glore Psychiatric Museum chronicles the 130-year history of what was once known as the State Lunatic Asylum No. 2. The Museum uses full-sized replicas, interactive displays, audio-visuals, artifacts, and documents to illustrate the history of the treatment of mental illness. The museum is recognized as one of the 50 most unusual Museums in the country. It is also featured in the book 1,000 Places to See Before You Die in the USA and Canada.
Crazy sad place. It's full of displays, replicas, and loads of leftover artifacts from pretty horrible time period for mental health. The building is beautiful and according to quite a few people it might even be haunted. Worth the visit for anyone looking for a weird museum, or anyone with an interest in the history of mental health in America.
This museum is pretty cool! The artifacts and displays within the building are a great testament to the history of treating mental illness. We stopped and spent about 30 min inside and saw most of what the museum had to offer. If you have time to spare I would recommend checking it out.
This is by far the coolest museum I've ever been to! I work in mental health and I still learned a lot! It was 4 stories filled with items used throughout the hx of mental health treatment. Could not recommend higher if you have an interest in this topic!
Interesting collection of instruments used throughout history to treat mental illness. Good introduction. Includes a brilliant collection of paintings/mixed media art by Steven Head. Paintings capture the pain of various mental health issues. Museum is combined w doll museum, black history and native Americans museum.
Definitely worth stopping
Absolutely AMAZING! I spent about 90 minutes there and could have been there another 2 hours. It's truly fascinating. I will definitely return if I'm ever in the area again.
Very neat place. Outlines the history of mental illness through the last two centuries. Also included a doll museum and black history museum. The building was incredibly warm, unpleasantly so but otherwise we loved it.
I've never seen anything like it - the quality is really so-so but the content is fascinating
Very interesting and knowledgeable for those who should be aware of mental illnesses. Sad.
Really cool and unsettling.
