This bridge, also called the Second Genesee Aqueduct (Erie Canal), Broad Street Aqueduct, or Broad Street Bridge, is a historic stone aqueduct bridge. It was constructed in 1836-1842 and originally carried the Erie Canal over the Genesee River. It has been altered over the years to serve as a subway and a highway. This stone aqueduct bridge was the original Erie Canal route through the center of Rochester, crossing over the Genesee River. After the new canal was built south of the city, a subway was built through the canal prism. A second level of arches was added to become today's Broad Street. The subway was abandoned in the 1950, and the lower level is currently just an empty tunnel most used by local graffiti artists to showcase their art (illegally). The Broad Street bridge is an active road atop this abandoned tunnel.
