The top half of the Hickory Point loop is water front. Deer run is heavily wooded and shaded.
Very modern and clean. All our neighbors were super fun to talk to.
There is still a bunch of this park we were not able to explore.
We had a great time for the annual Girl scout march, see ya next year!

We loved the beauty and landscape of the park, with large open spaces and plenty of accessible lake area. The camping area “A” was well maintained with an on-site host who worked hard to keep things in great order. Plenty of hiking/walking areas, each campsite came with a picnic table and fire ring, many with large grassy areas adjacent and large trimmed trees on the site. I only saw back-in sites in both the A and B campgrounds. Our area had electric but no water or sewer. We were told by the host that NO Illinois state parks have water at the campsites, just a general hookup for water located about 200 feet from our site. Come in with filled tanks or carry an extremely large hose!
Fishing is allowed on the lake in designated areas. No lake swimming, at least not near the campgrounds. I believe there may be limited non-motorized boating but call the park office to verify. No inflatables, toys or otherwise, in the lake. No drone usage. Within 30 minutes of Springfield, IL. Would stay again but only for the night.

We stayed in Deer Run Campground. It was just an overnight stay on the way to St Louis. It's one of those places that you regret only staying one night. The lake is simply stunning. The campground is well wooded, but the grass is well trimmed, the trees have plenty of clearance for our 13ft+ tall Class A. Backing into the site was easy.
Water and sewer at the entrance, although its back to front at this site so if you arrive with partial tanks stop on the way in. There's another campground a mile away with an easier dump.
Would definitely stay again and make the stay a week or two.
There is a $5 booking fee on ReserveAmerica.

This campground was a bit of a surprise to us. It was much nicer than we expected. This side of Hickory Point campground was quiet. The other side seemed a little crowded and loud. There was only 2 showers. If you aren’t self-supportive there may be a wait for showers in the busy season. It was a little difficult to get to, but we were coming in from the North.

We are driving 400 mile days and this was the perfect peaceful spot for a good night’s sleep.
Camp Hosts on site greeted us promptly.
Site was level.
Wooded but pruned well so our solar panels absorbed nicely.
It does take about 30 minutes to reach the park from 72 but it is well worth the extra time.

Stayed 4/13/19 to 4/15/19. I was here really early in the season so there were only a few other campers here. We actually had snow one day that I was here. Despite that, my stay was really nice. The host greeted me right away and showed me where my spot was. Like all IL state campgrounds I've been to, I didn't have a water hookup and had to go to the other loop of the campground for both water and the dumping station. My site was also really unlevel and I had to use a bunch of blocks to get the camper level. It also took a while to get into Springfield from this campground, but I think that was good and bad. Bad for the travel time, but good for the fact that there was no highway noise. Overall I really enjoyed my stay here and would definitely recommend it.

Many sites are right on the water. It was very hot and humid during our brief stay (1 night) but with the electric to run AC to cool the rig for sleeping it was just fine. Would love to come back and stay longer on the shoulder seasons.

Needed an overnight between St. Louis & Chicago and found this gem in the midst of lush corn and soybean farms. There are two campgrounds, one (Deer Run Tent/Trailer) at the lake and the other across the road (Hickory Point.) We camped away from the lake, but lakeside looked beautiful. Sites on our side were immaculate and large grassy lots with a gravel pad. The campground was shaded with large trees. We had electric, but no water. The camp host was extremely welcoming and said he would come to us to pick up fee. We did not have a reservation and found it wide open mid-week. There were hiking & equestrian trails, fishing, and other activities for a longer stay.

My wife and I arrived the Friday before Halloween and it was not know to use that there was a campsite decoration contest. and many sight were filled of decoration. there are 2 loops on ok n the lake and one in the woods... the loop by the lake was about 85%full and about 2/3 of that was decoration... the loop in the woods was about 30% full and only 4 or 5 of these had any decorations... i saw the grounds crew every day cleaning bathrooms and pit toilets... the camp host was friendly and inviting... even with all the people around it was still quite trip.
