“a civil rights landmark”
Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site is the preserved home of Maggie Walker. She devoted her life to civil rights advancement, economic empowerment, and educational opportunities for Jim Crow-era African Americans and women. As a bank president, newspaper editor, and fraternal leader, Walker served as an inspiration of pride and progress. Her home is preserved as a tribute to her enduring legacy of vision, courage, and determination.
I used to walk by the house every day on my way to and from work. It's very well kept up but not in the best part of the city. Parking on the street is best found one block up or down from the house.
