Wilson's Creek was the first major Civil War battle fought west of the Mississippi River, and the site of the death of Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union general killed in action. The costly Southern victory on August 10, 1861, focused national attention on the war in Missouri. Wilson’s Creek NB commemorates and interprets the battle within the context of the war in the Trans-Mississippi West.
This museum and attached tour area were one of my favorites on my recent trip. The museum is small but clean and educational. The rangers that work her are very friendly and will answer and and all questions you might have. They also have a “scavenger hunt” for kids doing the tour.
The museum is free, but to see the battlegrounds you must either hike/bike it, reserve a horseback trail ride, or drive through it (5 mile loop). The drive is $20 for one trip (per car) or $35 for 4 trips within a year. The tour is self-guided with signs, a paper map (available at the museum) and several stops have a phone number you can dial to listen to more detail.
Some of the stops have small hikes included, which I didn’t have time to do but if I went again would be better prepared for.
I highly recommend this place if you like history and/national monuments.
