“The Passage of Wind and Water”
The Sculpture Project: Passage of Wind and Water at Main Street Square is at the heart of a re-emergent Downtown Rapid City. The $2 million work is the largest privately funded public art commission underway in the United States. Sculptor Masayuki Nagase’s abstract design for the project explores the region’s history of continuous and often rapid transformation as well as our community’s aspirations for the future. Nagase trained in Japan, is based in Berkeley and has a long career as a stone sculptor and public artist. As the artist carves the project’s 21 granite pieces on-site during the summer months over five years, he’s opening up a conversation about common ground and shared values among community members and visitors.
