“take in stunning views of Put-in-Bay from the tower”
Tour the South Bass Island Lighthouse and learn about its history. Visitors can climb the stairs to take in a great view of Put-in-Bay from the top of the tower, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. There are opportunities to speak with Stone Lab staff about Gibraltar Island and pick up some Ohio Sea Grant publications. You can also see displays about Ohio's geological past and Lake Erie current ecosystem and research issues. South Bass Island Lighthouse is now home to OSU research and academic staff. The lighthouse and grounds have typically not been accessible to the public, but this changed in 2007 when the university started offering tours during the summer. Besides the lighthouse and a modern replacement light tower, an 1899 barn and an 1897 oil house remain standing on the property.
