Army Camp Campground

My hubby and I stayed two nights at the Army Camp and 2 at Grandview Sandbar across the river. Both have clean pit toilets, river acres, picnic tables, fire rings, and grills. Rangers came through but never stopped. We got their on the weekend and only found one spot left at the Army Camp but we were very pleased with it. Theirs no running water so bring plenty with you. Small beach area but very rocky so bring river shoes. It is extremely dark if you are into night photography its perfect!

We camped 4 days in July and found it to be a great free site. The first night we drove in and the 11 sites were all taken. Since it was late we set-up in the large parking lot for the night. The next day spots began to open between 9-11am. We grabbed the first site on the left around the circle nearest the bathrooms. This site had a walkway down to the river and the riverside beach was awesome. The campground seems to be a popular place for locals on the weekend but was quiet during the start of the week. There are drop in points up river between Glade Creek and the bridge where you can float back to Army camp. The sites are pull-in/back-in. We were able to get our 38ft Class A in with no problem. The road leading to the campground says "Narrow Road" but we had no issues with the width or terrain with our Class A and tow vehicle. The restrooms were very clean as was the rest of the campground.

Arrived around 7PM on a Friday night and we were lucky enough to snag the last available space. A few spots opened up Saturday morning, the last of which was taken between 8 or 9PM. We drive a 2020 mid-roof Ford Transit and had no issues accessing the campground, although the paved portion of the road leading to the campground is pretty narrow. Overall, our stay was very quiet and the New River is easily accessible with gorgeous views. Bathrooms were very well kept although make sure you bring a water supply if you don't want to filter the river water.

Found this last minute. Pulled in the dark. And woke up to our surprise it was a beautiful spot.

Nice day use area right on the water for fishing.

Fire pit and picnic tables on all sites, pretty easy to level in the site.

Arrived Sept 2, the Thursday before Labor Day. 10 sites, 6 available. Not much solar because you are in a gorge and the sun comes up over a mountain and goes down over a mountain. Close to many trails. Very clean pit toilet. Most campers were in tents or vans. I wouldn't recommend anything larger than 30 feet. Only 3 spots could handle it.

Arrived on a Thursday afternoon and about half the campsites were taken. We found a nice spot that easily fit our 14” travel trailer plus tow vehicle. The only thing that was sketch was the very narrow residential road leading up to it. Larger rigs will have troubles getting through.

Stayed here for 7 days in late October and we will be back! The campsite layout and location on the bend of the New River easily makes this one of our favorite spots. It was quiet and clean. Nestled in the gorge, you can hear the soothing sounds of the river at all times. We made several trips to the rivers access point, or as we called it "the beach." The convenient central location made hiking in several different areas of the Gorge a breeze. It is around 20 mins to Beckley, which has all the amenities you might need. The road into the campsite is narrow, but we did not have any issues and there are areas for a vehicle (not towing) to pull to the side if need be. We highly recommend Army Camp Campground!

This is a great little campground in the middle of New River Gorge. It's secluded and quiet and sites are spread out well.
The real only downside is access. The campground is in the very bottom of the river valley, which means a couple miles of very steep, very winding roads to get to. The last mile or so is EXTREMELY narrow. It's a 1 lane road with houses and steep banks. We made it with our 37' 5th wheel, but it was a slow careful ride. In a small truck or van it wouldn't be an issue though.
There's about 8 sites, and about 3 of them were large enough for our rig. The rest range in size but are all pretty spread out, so you get plenty of space. River access is just on the other side of the parking area with a nice large rock beach.
Cell service is virtually non existent. Our verizon phones got a sporadic 1 bar. My trucks OnStar (AT&T) got service and I could use it's wifi for checking email, but my AT&T hotspot got zero signal.

Able to easily drive down narrow Two mile road with our 25 foot campervan. Beautiful beach running alongside river that gave us a serene after supper walk. Only amenity was a very clean restroom.

Car/tent camped here in my Subaru Outback. Road to get down to camp is single lane paved, turning into gravel for last 1/2 mile. Mostly camper vans and tents. But did see one 24’ pull behind. Gravel sites are large with enough parking for 2 cars, fire pit, charcoal grill, and picnic bench. I believe all most of the sites had shade. Multiple trash cans. Clean pit toilet bathroom. Not able to see the river from sites but can hear it. Able to go down and walk along river. Would return and recommend!
Had very spotty and poor Verizon service. Was able to get a few iMessages out.
