Confirmed by 3 users | Last reported on October 25, 2021The campground at this state park opened on Nov 1, 2016 and we camped 2 nights the weekend of Nov 11-12. The campground was almost full over the weekend but was still quiet and relaxing.
Sites are gravel and mostly level but a little work at some sites getting might be required to get level. Each site has 20, 30, 50 amp electricity and water. There is also a picnic table and fire pit. Sites can accommodate large rigs and a few are pull thru, but most are back in. There is space between sites but they are not totally private.
The bath house, being less than 2 weeks of use was spotless. It is set up as individual rooms with a toilet and sink and is not gender specific. Virginia state parks says this was in response to a survey (that I recall completing) about campers who need help from opposite gender family members in restrooms. Showers are also a private set up and gender neutral.
There is a dump station in the park but we didn't use it.
The only issues we had was that the 30 amp at our site had reversed polarity. We notified the park and they added it to the punch-list for the contractor to address. Also, while the showers looked great, we couldn't get hot water from any of them.
Most sites have partial shade with sites with the exceptions being sites 1, 3, 28, and 29 being in full sun.
This state park is along the James River but the campground doesn't have any views of the river. Things to do here are canoeing (two canoe access in the park), hiking, biking and ranger lead activities. Hiking trails are dog friendly and some bike friendly.
I had 3 bars of 4g on my Verizon phone in the campground and 4 bars other places in the park.

This park is a bit off the beaten track. It is in the country so it is very quiet and peaceful. The camp hosts and park staff are very friendly and helpful. The sites have water and electric so it's on the pricey side especially with no sewer. Everything is clean and new – the RV area has only been open a few months. Most of the sites are surrounded by trees with only a couple out in the open. The sites are all big enough for any size rig; however, due to the narrow, curvy interior roads and deep ditches, some of the sites would be challenging (even impossible) to get into for larger rigs. The sites are long enough but they are not very level so it's hard for big rigs. We sufficed with almost level for our 45 foot motorhome. The sites are gravel and have nice big patio areas. There is also nice spacing between the sites. There is no sewer at the sites but there is a huge (and clean!) dump station that can handle four units at a time. Satellite coverage is only available in a couple of sites due to all the trees. Verizon coverage is good. The bathrooms are individual and clean. Some of them are pretty big too. There are hiking, biking and horse trails. They are shared so be prepared for some horse dung! Also, there are several access points to the river where you can put in a boat. The place really fills up on the weekends but it was quiet during the week. We will definitely return.

Being a fairly new state park, Powhatan was spotless. Cleanest state park we’ve stayed in. RV sites are nicely spaced with good distance and trees/bushes between. Some sites on a bluff with spotty views of the James River. Train track a mile away on the other side of the river, so expect some train noise, but nothing annoying. Being a distance away, it’s actually quite relaxing. Great canoe launch area for paddling the river. Beautiful park with rangers excited about their keep.

This has been one of my favorite state parks in Virginia. Not much close by, but a beautiful drive in and easy to find. Our site was partly shaded and very easy to back in to. All sites have easy access to the bathhouse which is very clean and well taken care of. There are also great hiking trails throughout the park as well as river access. If you are a bird watcher, there are so many great birds and my favorite, the Bob Whites, are all over the park! The entire park did so power for one night and the staff and campiest came by to check on everyone which was nice. We would definitely come back here.

Stayed two nights (6/10-11). We arrived at 5pm after the park rangers had left for the day and proceeded to our reserved camp site. The camp host John (along with his dog Max) dropped by during our setup, gave us our reservation package and provided a great review of the facilities and amenities available. The park offers good walking, hiking, biking and boating opportunities. All RV sites are spacious, well separated, pretty level and include elec & water. The is an excellent dump site on the way out of the park. The bath house was spacious and and very clean. Well off the beaten path, this was a great place for leisurely days and for quiet & star filled nights.

Since everything within 200 miles is booked every weekend all summer, we decided to spend some time down the street at Powhatan State park. Since we were there from Sunday to Friday, I had to work a few days while camping. Cell signal was fine for the VPN connection on T-Mobile and Verizon. Were able to do Netflix during the rain showers but had a great time hiking and biking during the sunnier times. Would definitely recommend for a nice quiet stay. Showers and restrooms are clean and well thought out. Will bring some tubes to float the river next time!

Far Out Frizzle stayed here from Sunday-Thursday. The campground was busy towards the beginning of my stay but cleared out towards the middle of the week. Mix of families, couples, and solos.
This campground was lovely. The sites are spaced far apart and there is privacy. Trees are tall and stately but are not in the way or obstructive. The bathhouse was amazing and included all private bathrooms and shower.
Goochland is the nearest hamlet at about 15 minutes away. Groceries, post office, etc. can be found there.
Internet worked great. Got about 2 bars on Verizon and perhaps a little more on AT&T. The latter seemed to work better.
This park is great for hikers, bikers, equestrians, and kayakers/canoes.
