“once warned mariners of the mud flats of the Esopus Meadows”
The current Esopus Meadows light house was built in 1871 to warn mariners of the mud flats known as the Esopus Meadows. After many years of neglect, a small, dedicated group of people formed the Save Esopus Lighthouse Commission to restore the light house to its former glory days.
