“preserving the history & relics of the past”
The Meigs County Pioneer and Historical Society was organized in 1876 and has held an annual meeting every year since. Throughout the years talk was of a place to preserve the history and relics of the past. In 1971, property was purchased at 144 Butternut Avenue, Pomeroy, Ohio and the Meigs County Museum became a reality. The Meigs County Museum, owned and operated by the Meigs County Historical Society, houses the Historical Society library, as well as the Meigs County Genealogical Society library. The Historical Society library holds many early Meigs County Probate records; Meigs County census to 1930; Family and local histories; Newspapers; Tombstone records; Photographs of area towns, individuals, sites; Maps; Surrounding publications of records, histories and censuses to 1930; Ohio Civil War Rosters; State & Local histories; Miscellaneous publications and records; IGI Index on microfiche for Ohio and several eastern states; Family trees, Ohio & other state and miscellaneous records on CD’s.
This is a phenomenal place to visit. The caretakers are knowledgeable and courteous. There is an expensive amount of artifacts. Take the time to plan a visit to this museum.
