We ended up extending for 10 days, and got a lot of work caught up on – as well as explored the many trails in the park. The park was just the peaceful solitude we needed.

I loved this state park even though it rained a majority of my time here. It is a beautiful wooded state park, many of the sites are spacious with trees in between sites. I was here in the late fall, so although the campground was not empty it was far from busy (just how I like it). I chose a site that was farther up the hill but there are sites on the water. A large variety of hiking trails, whether near the campground area or further out in the Pine Mountain Forest. Other day trips could include Providence Canyon SP, F.D. Roosevelt's Little White House in Warm Springs, GA or visiting Callaway Gardens.

This was our second Georgia State Park, so we were familiar with the process, you reserve a site by size and/or hookups and you can choose an empty one, meeting those requirements, after you check in. Check in was easy and the clerk gave us an overview of which sites would be appropriate for our rig. We have a 38' fifth wheel and were hoping for a 40'+ site with 50 amps. We started by driving thru the lakefront sites, but the site we wanted was taken, so we decided to head towards the other loop that she said had more sites that would suit us. This is a large campground, with multiple loops, some inside of others. The roads throughout the campground are narrow, single lane, with washouts on both sides in many places and trees sometimes in places that make it difficult for a larger rig to get through. That said, we made it out of this loop and headed to the next one. Georgia had seen about a solid week of rain before we arrived at FDR and many of the sites had flooded areas, so that limited our choices as well. We eventually found a site that we could back into and we started hooking up. The site was not very level and our leveling system balked a little, but we got it figured out. The site we chose was a 30 amp site, with two 30 amp hookups. The first we tried didn't work, so we hooked up to the second one, which worked until out AC kicked in, when it popped it's breaker. We reset it, but it was very hot, so we contacted the park and they sent someone over, who ultimately replaced both. So, all was well. There are no sewer hookups, but there are gray water dump areas throughout the campground, although most didn't seem convenient to any particular sites. The electric and water hookups were convenient to each campsite.
When we don't have sewer hookups, we use the bath house and, although they are fairly old, they were clean. There was no washer/dryer, but we were ok with that. The park is huge and there are lots of hiking trails and the drive through the center of the park was beautiful. We drove to Warm Springs and visited the Little White House one day and Callaway Gardens another. The closest town is Pine Mountain and there are a couple of restaurants, a liquor store (pretty pricey), grocery and hardware store, so if you need something there are places for that.
After driving around, minus the fifth wheel, we found many other sites that we would be happy in, especially once the water level went down. We enjoyed our stay and would consider returning in the future.

We loved this park. We camped here in April, 2017 in a 35 foot fifth wheel with 3 slides. Georgia state parks reservations are not site specific. After check in you can drive through the campground and choose a site that is the size you reserved.
Check in at the Visitor's Center was quick and easy. We were visiting during spring break and the campground was going to be full while we were there. We had reserved a premium 40 foot campsite and the ranger showed us the loops that would have the best sites for us. We chose a large pull through site in loop 5. All of the sites have Our site had water, electric, a nice gravel patio area with concrete picnic table and a fire pit. Our patio had a nice view of the woods. The sites in our loop were arranged so that there was a lot of space between sites. The bath house was clean and well maintained. There is a dump station. The only downside to the site was we were unable to get our satellite to work.
The campground is close to hiking trails. One of the loops is on a small lake. There is a well stocked camp store.
There is a lot to do in the area. Callaway Gardens is a short drive in one direction and FDR's Little White House a short drive in another direction. The drive along Hwy 190 is very scenic with several overlooks including Dowdell's Knob where F.D. Roosevelt liked to go.

Large spots, with woodland or lake views. Reserve a space, then choose your specific spot when you get there. Some of the access roads were a little narrow to navigate.
The many trails in the park were what we needed to stretch after 2 days on the road.

This park is right by Callaway Gardens. We stayed in loop #3 at site #301. It was very close to the lake but not right on it. There were two small bridges behind our campsite. Very picturesque.
The proximity of the park to Callaway Gardens was important because one person in our party ran the marathon they held there in January while the rest of us ran the 5K. Staying at the state park made it really simple to be at the starting line on time.
They have the best stocked park office around and totally helpful small general store. Everyone was very friendly. It was interesting to learn about how the CCC did so much work to make that state park amazing way back in Roosevelt's time.

We arrived later than we’d hoped so missed out on exploring the park, but the campground is great. After re negotiating our way back on to the main campground road we grabbed a pull through site just steps from the lake.
Note for other folks with a tendency to arrive after dark...while lakeside sites may look appealing, the access road to sites 113-116 is NOT friendly for larger rigs. Our 29’ rv *might* have made it through but I gave up and backed out.
Our site was flat and had electric and water. There’s a dump station at the rear gate, just around the corner from the campground.
Another note...sugar ants. They’ll find their way in and be a nuisance for some time to come. If you are prone to get lazy about putting your choice of deterrent at ground contact points...this isn’t the place to slack. Put down your best defenses on shore lines, jacks, wheels, and anywhere else that makes a bridge to your rig.
Overall this is a great, spacious campground and during our stay in Sept ‘18 was nearly empty. The main bath house was clean and well kept.
The lake is beautiful and we’d recommend enjoying this spot for longer than we had time for.

We were here in winter with less than 12 other campers so very quiet with store mostly closed except for weekends. Our site was a pull thru that could have handled a 45’ rig but roads are narrow and some turns are tight. Site selection is definitely a consideration as some would be very challenging to get into because of road design and trees.
Getting into office for registration is a challenge and would be more so in the busy summer season. Because park was empty, staff made a couple of suggestions and we had alternatives but one of them would not have been possible so be prepared. Facilities were very clean and well maintained and we enjoyed our stay. Enjoyed visits to Little White House, Callaway Gardens and Infantry Museum in Columbus
