“among the largest art museums in the US”
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is among the largest art museums in the United States. It has collections of more than 227,000 objects that include "world-class holdings of European and American paintings, prints, drawings and decorative arts." The Main Building is visited by more than 800,000 people annually, and is located at the west end of Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Other museum sites include the Rodin Museum, also located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway; the Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building, across the street from the Main Building; and historic houses in Fairmount Park. The Perelman Building opened in 2007, and houses some of the more popular collections, as well as the Museum's library, with over 200,000 books and periodicals, and 1.6 million other documents. The museum is closed on Mondays, and the basic entrance price is $20, with various concessions. The museum holds a total of about 25 special exhibitions every year, including touring exhibitions arranged with other museums in the United States and abroad. Some have an extra charge for entrance.
Being totally honest we did not go into the museum. We just wanted to do the Rocky stairs. Parking was free behind the museum because we were there for such a short time. You cannot walk through the museum to get to the front stairs (if you park in the back) you do have to walk around the outside of the museum through the parking lot.
There were lots of other people running up the stairs and taking photos but in general the feeling was very fun and enjoyable. Great views from the top the stairs.
A great museum. There is a fantastic collection of art (I'm a sucker for their Impressionist collection), but also many religious and cultural artifacts. The Asian section, with a rebuilt Hindu (?) temple and Japanese tea ceremony is worth the visit alone. Plan lots of time, because you won't run out of things to see.
If you're looking for a good workout, run up these stairs just like Rocky did. I wonder if there is a record of the fastest time someone has run up them.
Even if you don't like art, you can still run up the steps, Rocky-style, just like in the movie!!
Nice museum with an extensive collection of important art. Many Monet's, Picasso's, Van Gogh's, etc, as well as rotating exhibits. First Sunday of the month is "pay what you wish." And, if you can't find a parking space, there is a (rather pricey) garage behind the museum. That rear entrance was also much less busy.
The art here is fantastic, though I'm not very into the armory section of the museum
I'm not really an art museum type traveller. But this place was beautiful. We went on a name your own price night to avoid the steep admission. Spent an hour or so touring the galleries. Then spent awhile outside admiring the grounds and posing with Rocky.
