“The cradle of industrial America”

The Great Falls of Paterson is considered the cradle of industrial America; it was Alexander Hamilton, the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury, who in 1791 marshaled a group of private investors to harness the power of the falls and run a system of mills. The result was America’s first planned industrial city for the manufacture of domestic goods. Paterson Great Falls is a new national park unit that is open to the public for self guided outdoor activities and tours. A trip to Paterson should include the Great Falls, a National Natural Landmark. Their beauty and power are central to Paterson's story. Trace the paths of the Passaic River and millraces. Take in the mill buildings' architecture in the National Historic Landmark District around the park. Or relax and re-energize by enjoying the natural features at the heart of this historic industrial city. Keep in mind these tips before you visit. While the National Park Service is working to provide staff and programming to the site, we encourage you to check out the Paterson Museum and it's associated site the Great Falls Historic District Cultural Center. On November 7, 2011 Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis designated the site as America's 397th National Park. Home to one of the nation's largest and most spectacular waterfalls, Great Falls was harnessed to power new industries and played a key role in shaping the American Industrial Revolution and building the U.S. economy.

This is a beautiful place that everyone can enjoy, thanks to the easy hike to get there. It's really picturesque, and a great place to enjoy a picnic. We think it's one of the best things to do in New Jersey!
