“the "crown jewel" of the Poconos”
The residents and visitors to Lake Wallenpaupack owe a debt of gratitude to Palmyra Township (Pike County) and PPL Corporation. They recently partnered to complete a new 3 mile out and back hiking trail at Lake Wallenpaupack. While hiking the trail one gets a sense of the magnificence and magnitude of Lake Wallenpaupack. Visitors walking the trail are awed by its natural beauty and scenic wonders. The 5,700 acre lake is a treasure and considered the "crown jewel" of the Poconos. The trailhead starts at the parking lot just a few hundred meters south of the Route 6 & Route 507 interchange on 507. The trail runs north along the top of the PPL dike 3/10's of a mile and then past the new Lake Wallenpaupack Visitor Center, home of the Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau and the Pocono Region Chamber of Commerce. Hikers pass the Palmyra Township beach and the Wilsonville Campgrounds, then pass the Wallenpaupack Area Football Stadium. The 1 1/2 mile mark is at the trailhead of the Wallenpaupack Creek Trail, close to the PPL Learning Center and a few hundred meters past the Lake Wallenpaupack Watershed Management District Office. At this point hikers can start back or continue hiking along the Wallenpaupack Creek Trail. The creek trail goes over the huge flume that feeds water down to the power plant along the Lackawaxen River. Hikers can visit the PPL dam, where another visitor center explains the history of the lake. The trails are considered easy with very little slope. The trails are crushed stone or wood chips for easy and comfortable walking. There are restrooms available and even a snack bar that's open during the summer season.
