“Founded in 1809”
Miami University (informally known as Miami, Miami U, Miami of Ohio, and MU) is a coeducational public research university located in Oxford, Ohio, United States. Founded in 1809, although classes were not held until 1824, it is the 10th oldest public university in the United States and the second oldest university in Ohio, founded four years after Ohio University. In its 2012 edition, U.S. News & World Report ranked the university 3rd for best undergraduate teaching at national universities, and 90th in the overall rankings. Forbes also ranked Miami University as 34th among U.S. public universities and 1st among public universities within Ohio. Miami's Division I sports teams are called the RedHawks. They compete in the Mid-American Conference in all sports except ice hockey, in which the team is part of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Miami is nicknamed the "Cradle of Coaches" for the star-quality coaches that have trained through its football program and in early 2012 Miami trademarked the phrase. Its men's basketball team has appeared in 16 NCAA basketball championship tournaments, reaching the Sweet Sixteen four times. Miami's ice hockey team finished runner-up in the 2009 national championship game.
I can't write enough about Miami. This is my home away from home and always will be. As a 2011 alumni, I spent the best life-changing 4 years of my life in Oxford. Miami is nationally recognized as a strong academic school, coupled with an amazing college town, and rich traditions. Some buildings to see when visiting: The Farmer School of Business (Top 20 in US), Upham Arch, Bell Tower, Slant Walk, Uptown (our version of main street), and the brand new Armstrong Student Center (opened Feb 2014). Currently, Miami is under a 20-year campus renovation period where they are upgrading buildings and facilities left and right. Expect construction, but don't let that take away from the natural beauty of Oxford and the consistent and iconic red brick buildings covering campus. Truly, LOVE & HONOR!
Love and honor. The campus is incredible and in the middle of nowhere. I agree with everything Coop said, and definitely check out some of the newer attractions, as well (new student center and business school are incredible).
Visit in the fall to see great fall colors. Take a walk down slant walk and kiss your sweetie under the Upham Arch and you just might end up married. So much history if you read the markers around campus. Formal Gardens is also a beautiful spot to walk through.
