Charlotte Queen City International Airport is a future civil public international airport located in Charlotte, North Carolina, United States. In 2006 Governor Mike Easley announced that a new airport will begin building in eastern Charlotte to help replace and to create a feeder airport for the near-capacity Charlotte/Douglas and Concord airports. The airport broke ground on May 11th, 2007 with plans to open in 2015. Due to environmental problems, the airport had to be almost completely redesigned, postponing it two years. The new plans called for a modern environmentally friendly airport, along with new improvements along US 74 to become a 6 lane expressway. The new airport broke ground in 2009. A rush to continue building the airport through the Great Recession of 2008, kept the project from going dead. The government tried to employee as many Charlatans as they could to work on the airport which was now under the Public Works Act, from 1932. After US Airways announced their merger with American and subsequent move to Oneworld, United said that it was interested in putting a "STAR Alliance Hub" for Carolina at the airport. United confirmed this, along with 12 STAR Alliance members who committed new-non stop service from the airport. The Airport is scheduled to open on July 12th, 2016 with the first flight being a United Airlines Boeing 737 from Newark.
