“A drive-thru Zoo”
The Virginia Safari Park opened in the spring of 2000 because we felt there was a need and desire for people to be able to see wild animals in a much more natural environment than had previously been available. In the Safari, you'll be able to see animals run and frolic with abandon on our 180-acre property. The animals are free to roam—no pacing back and forth in front of a barred exhibit! Drive your vehicle over 3 miles of maintained gravel road and feed the animals through your windows! But don't be in a hurry, the animals often block your path...or lay flat-out in the sun...the choice is theirs! Not only are our animals free to roam, but they follow their instincts. Males challenge each other for the attention of the females, resulting in cute baby animals being born throughout the season. Sometimes visitors are lucky enough to observe a birth in progress, and watch as the baby takes its first steps!
What a fun stop. A zoo like we've never experienced with a unique opportunity to get up close and personal.
Enjoyed the ride. Make sure save food for the petting area. pay attention to the signs at the camels
Family of six had a great time. Great camping grounds near by
We loved our visit to Virginia Safari Park. It entertained us for an entire day. The rates for admission and animal food were extremely reasonable. We got to interact with so many animals, and best of all was seeing so many species roaming the very large habitat, intermingling, rather than standard zoo exhibits which limit habitats to only a couple of species (or even one per)! They give you a photo pamphlet of all the animals in the zoo and it's fun to try to determine who you're meeting as you drive through. Very educational. FYI: the deer are surprisingly strong and try to steal your bucket by using downward pressure to push it out of your hand; the camels will grab your entire bucket and eat it plastic and all; the Watusi and Scottish highlands cattle are amazingly gentle giants. Oh, and you WILL want to visit a car wash after your visit to wash off the animal drool and vacuum up the food that's spilled into your car.
This place is the best. It's awesome to feed a buffalo or elk or ostrich with their head inside the window of your car. Do it before someone changes to rules.
We remember feeding the camels that way before, but now there are tubes to put the food down to feed them from a distance; maybe the camels were causing problems.
Fantastic adventure! We had so much fun and would definitely go back if we are ever close by again. Some of the animals are pushy about being fed, ex: llamas & bison. The walk-thru portion is equally as awesome as the drive-thru, especially loved feeding the giraffes.
I loved it so much I'm going back!
Soooo much fun, laughed our butts off while the Ostriches poked inside the car
Great stop for families- so much to do! We loved it!
Best zoo visit ever!! Money well spent!
