Four generations of Wagoners have been working in leather since the last century, starting with E. Wagoner who was a saddlemaker of some renown in Ohio, Colorado, and New England in the 1880s. (It isn't certain when he quit making saddles, but many are still to be found in service.) His son, Dwain Wagoner, founded the Wagoner Leather Shop in Mount Vernon, in 1842, operating until 1955, Having grown up with the inviting feel and smell of leather, Duke and Laurel Wagoner decided in 1969 to open their own shop, Down Home Leather. Assisted by their three children and other family members, they have operated their manufacturing and retail outlet in the same location since that time, in addition to selling their handmade, hand-tooled leather goods at numerous craft shows. Their well-made distinctive products - clean, straight-forward, and functional - have become known as true Down Home classics. They never go out of style.
