“Wildlife in the Rolling Hills!”
Rolling hills surrounded by fields, woods, ponds and fishing lakes make this park popular for hikers, anglers, canoeists, swimmers and campers. Quiet Echo Lake is ideal for catching bass, northerns and panfish. The Willard Munger Trail is located two miles west of the park. The trail stretches for 60 miles from Hinckley to west Duluth. The open areas of the park, along with the mature hardwood stands, combine to provide habitat for a wide variety of wildlife species including white-tailed deer, geese, ducks and a variety of songbirds. Visitors fish for northerns, walleyes, and largemouth bass in Moosehead and Echo Lakes, and for pan fish in Echo Lake. Beginning in 1962, local residents began working for the establishment of a state park in order to increase the number of camping sites in the area. The park became a reality in 1971 and by August of 1977, a picnic area was completed on the north shore of Echo Lake. Over the years, additional campsites, picnic areas, hiking trails and a swimming beach have been added.

This State park is a hidden jewel, nice quiet campground and picture perfect lake. The trails are nice with plenty of scenery. This park still has many first come first serve sights. It's a great weekend get away park.

I stayed here one night in April 2017, at campsite 26e. The electric spots generally have fantastic privacy and are spaced apart pretty well, but are otherwise unremarkable. This park tends to be much less busy (and less beautiful) than anything on the North Shore (including Jay Cooke State Park).
The park is relatively close to I-35, making it suitable for a one-nighter on the road to somewhere else. Very little highway noise at the campground. The road from the park entrance to the campground is a little under a mile and it’s dirt with some ruts. Should be no issue for tiny cars and big class A RVs alike, as long as you take it slow.
My campsite and several others were level, but you have to reverse down an incline to get there. Not all were this way.
26e had working and correctly wired 30A electric.
Cell service at campsite:
AT&T: 1-2 bars LTE, feels incredibly slow, 1253ms ping, 2.1mbps down, 2.67mbps up
Verizon: 2 bars 1x, essentially unusable, 390ms ping, 0.03mbps down, 0.06mbps up – but sometimes a bar of LTE would come in. Much better LTE service toward park entrance and good service next to and on I-35.
T-Mobile: 2 bars LTE, 84ms ping, 13.95mbps down, 0.48mbps up
Across I-35 is a McDonald’s, Mobil, and KwikTrip.

We stayed weekend of 4/30-5/2, 2021. Trails are nice and wider than most. Echo Lake offers fishing and a nice swimming and picnic area. Campgrounds are relatively quiet and divided into three loops. The loop on end of road has best spacing and electric service. We will definitely return for summer and/or fall to experience other seasons at this relaxing park! Deducted 1/2 star for 30amp service not working at our site. 20amp was operable so still able to power every with planning.

I stayed here because I needed a one-night rest stop on a long road trip and the cost was not too bad, $33 for the site + $8 reservation fee. The park office includes a small gift shop and geology museum so I had an opportunity to learn a bit about the park during my short stay. I was warned about bears in the area during check-in.
The roads past the park office were dirt and gravel and because it was fairly dry, it didn’t cause an issue. But I wondered how easy it would be to get around the camping loops if the roads were really wet.
My site had a 30 amp hookup with no water or sewer and the site itself was level enough to skip the trouble of adjusting it for one night. It was pretty narrow and surrounded by tall bushes and trees. There were wide spaces between the sites so it would be easy to get tucked into the site and not see or hear anyone else. There was a picnic table and fire ring.
Cell signal with T-mobile was good enough to stream TV. I had a similarly adequate signal with an ATT router, but my Verizon router did best.
