“Visit the Gus Grissom Memorial”

Spring Mill State Park offers a powerful illustration of the link between the natural and cultural worlds. The water flowing from several cave springs led to the founding of an industrial village in the early 1800s. Pioneer entrepreneurs took advantage of a constant water source that never froze, using it to power several gristmills, a wool mill, a saw mill, and a distillery. In turn, pioneer settlers shaped the landscape around the village, clearing land for agriculture and timber. The park today continues to illustrate how nature shapes us and how we shape our environment. A parcel of virgin timber sits in contrast to regenerated forest, a man-made lake struggles to survive against the in-flow of silt from cave-fed systems, and the native flora and fauna face challenges from man’s introduction of new species. Check out the latest fall colors with the leaf camera situated on top of the Pioneer Village's grist mill. Visitors can explore this story in the park’s four interpretive facilities—the Pioneer Village, Nature Center, Grissom Memorial, and Twin Caves Boat Tour—and see it reflected on the landscape as they hike the trails. The interpretive staff also offers a wide variety of public programs, including an extensive special events schedule. Public programs are offered year-round.

Been coming here since I was a kid. The mill is pretty awesome, and if you're a space geek they even have something for you at the Grissom Memorial. Be advised, your cell phone WILL NOT work pretty much anywhere near this place.

Spring Mill SP is a large property with a good diversity of activities for a longer stay. This summer coronavirus has the pool closed and some facilities And activities limited. However, the campground is beautiful with varied sites under thick forest cover to sunny exposed. The changing elevations in southern Indiana are nice to look at but require levelers at virtually every site. Check your hose length against water distance for full hookups... the water spigots are located between the generously sized sites so we ended up hand hauling water in storage containers. If you don’t like our workaround, we did notice plenty of extra hoses were in stock at the camp store! A resident skunk (thankfully not a nervous one) wandered through the campground at dark. Good entertainment listening to folks alerting their neighbors. Skies are dark for telescopes, and the rustic sites are relatively close to a bathhouse. Plenty of miles for road biking and a shorter mountain bike trail. Check out the historic village, astronaut memorial museum, and virgin forest with huge trees.

Needed a place for one night as we drove through Indiana. Couldn’t use reservation system online or over phone for walk up or same day.

Had to find a spot and then walk back to the entrance to pay.

Still charging $30 a night even thought it’s November and all the other Indiana state parks we stayed at last week charged only $15.

Bathhouse could definitely use some updating and not the cleanest either (surprising given COVID).

Some sites are better than others and bring extra water hose length as water is spread out and shared between 2-3 sites.

Struggled with AT&T cell/internet at our site. Walked the whole campgrounds and service was unavailable in most locations.

Spent 2 nights here. Too early in the season for water to be turned on. They had a full station for fresh water tanks on the way in. Camp store was closed. Had to get fire wood from a guy selling in town (Mitchell). 30 amp hookup. Cellular signal not really reliable enough to be useful. Nice trails in the park. And the pioneer village was really cool. If you’re a space nut the park also has a memorial to Gus Grissom which is where his Gemini space capsule is located. I would come again but on weekends only because I need cellular for work.

Great campsite, people were friendly and the grounds and facilities were clean. The State Oark offers so much in the way of history, hiking, and the Inn.

Another great Indiana state park. Clean, well-maintained. Great hiking and pioneer village. The restaurant at the inn is also good. Internet is the absolute worst, so hard for us to work while camping. Busy but quiet. Like most Indiana state parks the public bathrooms need some major work.

No real cell service (ATT) in the campground, but there is decent wifi signal provided by Public Indiana at the Campstore, Nature Center, Park Office/Grissom Memorial and the Inn. We missed the pool season but it looks like a really nice swimming facility if you come during summer, and pool is solar power heated. Trails well maintained, the historic Inn serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily, including beer and wine available. Great cycling all around the park, don't miss the Pioneer Village. Clean-enough bathhouse, hot water!

We were looking to take advantage of the warmer temperatures and headed for our first visit to Spring Mill State Park at Mitchell, Indiana. The hilly park makes good use of its well maintained roads to wind through some of Indiana's finest State Park country. In addition to the classic inn with its restaurant and lodging the park features the well preserved Pioneer Village and the not to be missed Gus Grissom museum. The trees had passed their colors and most were bare but the solitude and the natural beauty of the grounds provided for a pleasurable weekend. We selected Lot 23 which is located in the campground loop that features many mature trees and offers lots of shade in the summer months. The other campground appeared to have younger and fewer trees but still a nice area to camp. Lot 23 has a creek that runs behind it. (If you want the creek right behind you pick lot 24 which also looks level.). We were fortunate that 23 was level and required no adjustments on our part. Beware that while there are a good number of "level" lots we came across many that would have been a challenge to us. Be sure to take note of the lot descriptions that may list "slight incline" but could indicate a significant slope. Probably not a problem for many trailers but our 25 foot Class C would not have enough lift to make us level. The Campstore had a nice variety of supplies which came in handy as we found we needed an extension for our drinking water line. While I remembered the online description as saying "Electric Only" we were happy to find water available. The water spigot, however, was the farthest from our site that I had ever experienced. Our 25 foot line was not enough. We enjoyed touring the Pioneer Village which was holding a craft show. We also took advantage of the many trails available. I would highly recommend taking some time at the Gus Grissom Museum next to the front gate. The nearby town of Mitchell is proud of its native son and this collection of artifacts from Gus's extraordinary service tells an inspiring story. There's a short film that tells the Grissom story in fine fashion. Although we have a number of Indiana State Parks yet to visit we will gladly return to Spring Mill State Park to enjoy its beauty and amenities.

The campground pros are full hookups, nice campground overall, clean restroom and the staff are friendly .
Cons big rigs have to dodge low tree branches . Most campsites do not have level pads.
