“one of the area's greatest assets”
Wilson Island, named after former Governor George Wilson, came into existence as an island sandbar around 1900. Today, Wilson Island State Recreation Area encompasses 544 acres of dense cottonwood stands. Seclusion is one of the area's greatest assets and spacious shady campsites, hiking trails and picnic spots provide a welcome retreat. Wildlife is abundant in the park and a visitor may see deer grazing in the park's fields or be awakened by a huge flock of snow geese flying low overhead in the fall. Bald eagles are often perched in the tall cottonwoods during the winter and mushroom hunters will find no better place in the spring.

Flooding on the Missouri river in June 2019 has closed all use of this beautiful campground and state park. Be sure to check the Iowa state parks web site
Spoke to them today to make reservations for June but they are still not sure of when they will reopen. There’s hope they will reopen this Summer but until they’re certain, no reservations are being made.
Typical State Campground with fairly level gravel pads, 20/30/50 amp electric service, picnic table and fire pit. Modern Shower House is available. Campground is located far away from the highway, so the area is quiet. The Missouri River is not very scenic here, but the park is across the road from the Desoto National Wildlife Refuge, which is very attractive. Drive past the first campsites to the far south end to find more secluded campsites.
