“Do you like Beaux Arts?”
Recognized as one of the finest examples of Beaux Arts architecture in the country, the Basilica of Saint Mary was constructed between 1907 and 1915. It was raised to the rank of minor basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The Basilica’s story is about inspiring, hardworking, and committed people. From the humble Shed Church of 1868 to Father Michael O'Connell's bold struggle in the 1990s to save the deteriorating Basilica of Saint Mary.
Visited after a trip to the nearby Sculpture Garden. Beautiful structure and the staff were quite accommodating, sending us downstairs to see the art while a wedding concluded. We were welcome to sit in the back of the basilica during the wedding but chose not to chance disturbing the service. Worth a visit!
