“Observe the Prairie Wildlife!”
Melting glacial ice formed this 1,350-acre lake thousands of years ago. Lake Herman State Park is located on a peninsula and offers visitors spectacular views of Lake Herman. Camping, boating, fishing, and cross country skiing are favorite activities at the park. Observe wildlife in the native oak woodlands and prairie grasses that inhabitat a variety of birds and animals. Lake Herman has been a popular campsite for hundreds of years. Before white settlers entered the region, it was popular among Indians traveling to nearby Pipestone quarries. The first settlers at Lake Herman were Herman Luce and his son, William. They settled the timberland on the east side of the lake and assumed squatters' rights on June 17, 1870. The log cabin in the park was built for Herman Luce in the summer of 1871. The cabin is made of sturdy oak logs hand hewn to fit snugly and chinked to keep out the cold. Luce's cabin briefly served as a U. S. Land Office, with Herman Luce in charge. In 1977, the Herman Luce Cabin was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Lots of trees but still very open. Site was situated between main lake and pond. Kayaks and canoes for rent from camp host at very low rates. Hiking trails are easy and pamphlets available to help you discover birds, trees and fauna. Did not fish but lake is known for huge walleyed pike. Saw plenty big ones jumping out of water when at beach. During week was quiet and not full but weekends are more crowded. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Restrooms and showers were very clean.

Lake Herman has become one of our favorite places. The sites are big and spacious. Bathrooms and showers were very clean. The shower water pressure could pin you to the wall- LOL! There is lots to do including frisbee golf. Sunsets are gorgeous.

We chose this park because of the $23 rate. When we called to make reservations there was a $2 reservation fee, and a $7.70 out of state camping fee, when we arrived we had to pay a $6 daily park fee.
The park is beautiful, large trees and lots of grassy areas in between sites. Bathrooms and showers were very clean. No water hook up, but water was available to fill RV.
The beach water had green algae but the locals didn't seem too concerned. We stayed on a Monday night in August and we were the only campers in the upper campground. One cabin had a family in it.

This was a last minute stop and we are so glad we did that we stayed another night. It is a very well maintained campground. The bathrooms and shower were very clean and well kept. There are 2 beach/swim areas. We stayed in the lower loop on the pond and enjoyed it very much.

After visiting Pipestone, the Minnesota State Parks weren’t open, so I headed west into South Dakota. This is a very nice campground. Mature trees, and lots of sites. Nice for bike riding around the park. I would pick the upper campground again, although the lower campground has lots of shade and right next to lake access.

Pretty quiet around labor day weekend. Not a great amount of trails or hiking but plenty of water for those kinds of activities. Facilities were clean, if not quite as ample as other parks. Not enough trash disposal for the weekend as you could see trash mountains coming from the few dumpsters around the campgrounds. Probably not a destination but a nice stop along the way. Good T-Mobile 5G, 125+ down.
