Families and individuals with European, African, and American Indian backgrounds, who lived, worked, and died in the North End are buried here. Old North Sexton Robert Newman, and black educator, leather dresser, and Masonic Grand Master Prince Hall are among those who are buried in these grounds dating as early as 1660. From this spot on June 17, 1775, British soldiers bombarded Breed’s Hill with naval guns during the Battle of Bunker Hill.
