“Built into a Gorge!”
Whetstone Gulf State Park is built in and around a three-mile-long gorge cut into the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau. The gorge is one of the most spectacular scenic vistas east of the Rocky Mountains. The park has 56 wooded campsites- some of which are electric, a scenic picnic area along Whetstone Creek, a man-made swimming area and trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, one of which circles the gorge. Above the gorge is Whetstone Reservoir, stocked with tiger muskie and large-mouth bass for fishermen, and popular for canoeing.

There is a wonderful hiking loop with several options for beginner to advanced hikes. The park offers handicap accessible sites close to the lodge and beach front area. There is a brand new playground area and pavillions for day use.
The camp sites are well maintained and brand new bathrooms with showers are centrally located. The driving paths are paved, excellent for kids to ride bikes and skateboards around! The swim area is a small but I think it’s perfect. The shallow area is roped off well for the little ones and there is a deep end and a short swim to the other side of the swimming area, which is just a damned off river. The damn is right there, fun to watch. The swimming area is well manintained and there is a lifeguard on duty!

We went in the winter time and there were no fees to enter. We drove in, parked and went for a nice little hike in the woods by a river. There are also longer hikes if you are looking for that. Nice pit stop during a long road trip to get the legs moving!
