“Rest in Pieces”
Three hundred yards south of the house stands the Jones family cemetery. During the Civil War, several soldiers were buried here, including Colonel Joseph Moesch of the 83rd New York Volunteers and Keith Boswell of "Stonewall' Jackson's staff. Their remains were transferred to other cemeteries after the war. Ellwood's most famous interment is "Stonewall" Jackson left arm. On May 2, 1863, Jackson was wounded by the mistaken fire of his own troops at Chancellorsville. Surgeons removed the injured limb at nearby Wilderness tavern. The following day, Jackson's chaplain Beverley Tucker Lacy, carried the amputated arm across the fields and buried it in his brother's graveyard. It remains here to this day, the only marked grave in the cemetery.
Reviews
The address given through the Roadtrippers app was inaccurate, and it took a further google search to find the actual location. Not much to see, but still a quirky find and a good conversation picture =)
It might just be a gravestone, but for some reason, it is a whole lot of fun to say you visited the site where Stonewall Jackson's arm is buried. Located on the Ellwood Plantation, the house is beautiful and fun to see as well. The volunteers are all very interested in what they do and love talking about the history of the plantation, area, and battles around it. This is the address: 36380 Constitution Hwy, Locust Grove, VA 22508.
We had trouble finding this. It's at the Ellwood Manor. Walk past the house, through the backyard and you'll see a small path on the right to grave site. Beautiful views and funny pictures. A nice worker told us a little more about the history of this unique grave. We got a kick out of it!
