“Groovy fallout shelter”
This seemingly typical, two-story suburban home might not look like much, but it hides a pretty rad secret: a fully-equipped underground home... you know, just in case. Built by wealthy businessman and total crazy person Girard Henderson, it was intended to be a nice little nuclear fallout shelter in case the Cold War took a turn for the worse. He had it built in the 1970s, and you can definitely tell. The color scheme, the draperies, the wallpaper, the appliances... everything has that retro feel. Other than the questionable decor, though, it's easily one of the nicest fallout shelters ever constructed. It's got two bedrooms, a kitchen, a laundry room, a guest casita... and a ton of faux "outdoor" space. There's a 360-degree panoramic mural of a nature scene painted on the walls, a 4-hole putting green, a pool, a jacuzzi, a grill, a patio, and even lighting that can be set to mimic different times of day. Henderson preferred to live down there as much as possible, in case of a nuclear strike, but once he died in 1983, the home went to his wife. When she passed away a few years later, it went to some relatives, who sold it to a buyer, who had the home foreclosed on. It was recently purchased for a cool $1.15 mill by a mysterious group known as the Society for the Preservation of Near Extinct Species. Very little is known about this group, but I have a feeling that they'll treat the house in a way that the man who built it would want. *This home is on private property, please don't trespass
