“set along the upper Lochsa River”
White Sands Campground is set along the upper Lochsa River and a small lake. It is only about one mile south of Hwy 12 on Elk Summit Road. The area is forested with open meadows scattered about. The Lochsa River bottom is fairly wide here, and the land seems to be more rolling than the high mountainous country it really is. The campground is not well maintained. From the disabled well to the badly rutted road and camp sites, it is in sorry shape. The campers we saw were younger and were "roughing it" in tents. There were quite a few children running around and fishing at the lake. Camping and fishing in the nearby streams and rivers as well as the lake which is stocked each year with trout are the primary activities for those campers we saw. We didn't make it to visit Lolo Pass which is only 12 miles or so to the east on Hwy 12. You may want to check out the Visitors Information Center.

I was going to but decided to splurge and camp at Lolo Hot Springs ($17). It’s $10 to get in their hot pool and I highly recommend it it’s honestly one of the most relaxing waters I’ve ever been in. Nice and hot and full of chill out magnesium goodness.
As for the campground there are plenty of sites and right along the river. It’s $8 but it says $4 if you have a senior or interagency pass, so I assume that means the annual national parks pass.
There’s a wheelchair accessible outhouse and a big dumpster near the front of the campsite. There’s also a hand drawn well pump but the water had a copper tinge so I don’t know how good it is to drink. But it is a beautiful campground and Weir Hot Springs is just 10-15 miles west down the highway and I highly recommend that. You won’t get any T-Mobile service for a long time so plan ahead!
Only a mile of dirt road to the campsite and it is very smooth.

Such a beautiful campground! Hard to see the signage from highway 12 and about a mile drive on a potholed dirt road but nothing 4WD can’t handle. 6 spots right next to the rushing river and a ton of privacy between them. Pit toilets were okay and the water pump was shut off, but there’s a dumpster out front. So serene and pretty out there, you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Absolutely zero service in the roughly 2 1/2 hr stretch on 12 between Kooskia ID and Lolo MT. White House and Jerry Johnson were closed when we went so this was an excellent spot to stumble across. So lovely!
