“One of america's best roads”
Iron Mountain Road, also known as 16A, is an incredible journey, an unforgettable experience. We believe that it is the most unusual and captivating road in America. Everyone that has experienced this 17 mile stretch in the Black Hills of South Dakota leaves with an opinion about this road, either good or bad this road will leave an impression. We want folks to learn about and appreciate this road for what it is, a historical work of art designed to make you slow down, to see and feel things that you don’t experience every day. Along this 17 mile journey you will not only experience the architectural wonders of this road, but also the wonders of Mother Nature. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself stopped in the middle of a buffalo herd as they cross the road, grazing and nurturing their young. Take time to look around, you most likely will see antelope, deer and turkey, or you could even spot big horn sheep or a mountain lion. Every trip along this road will be a different experience. In order to experience everything the road has to offer you should travel it in both directions – you will see and experience different things each way.
This is an amazing drive. Pair it with the Custer State Park wildlife loop. Makes for an all around awesome drive. Stop at the rest area and snap a few long distance Rushmore pictures.
I cannot believe somebody designed a road to just like a roller coaster - now if only they'd shut the road and let me take a rally car up and down it... Seriously it does provide some fanatically framed views of Mt Rushmore and the surrounding countryside.
Just make sure to take your dramamin. Very cool road with rock tunnels. Takes a bit of time to travel it though only going 20mph the majority of the time.
Amazing and one of my favorite parts of the trip!!
Awesome views of Mt. Rushmore and surrounding areas! Great drive- even more fun on the bike!
This road is a MUST DO for a Roadtripper! Such a beautiful, unique ride with amazing scenic views and unique views of Mount Rushmore! Suggest you do this ride off-season when you can stop and take photos as you go!
The most amazing views we had of Mount Rushmore and we spent hours at the memorial. A surreal experience.
View of Mount Rushmore through two tunnels (Scovel Johnson and Doane Robinson) as you're heading North. Have you're camera ready before going through. Lots of winding U-turns and tight curves. Off season, people tend to go too fast around curves.
RV clearance of 10’9” through tunnels. We didn’t risk it.
The tunnels were my favorite! How fun! And beautiful!
