“Great scenery, great history, great hiking”
Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park in Kennesaw, Georgia, preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign, and also contains Kennesaw Mountain. The name "Kennesaw" is derived from the Cherokee Indian "Gah-nee-sah" meaning "cemetery" or burial ground. The area was designated as a U.S. historic district on October 15, 1966. It was a sweltering, hot and clear Monday, June 27, 1864, when some of the heaviest fighting of the Atlanta Campaign occurred here. Over 5,350 casualties were suffered in the battle fought here from June 19 through July 2, 1864. Today, Kennesaw Mountain NBP preserves the remnants of that battle and offers miles of hiking trails where history peeks out from around every turn.
Excellent hiking opportunities here with 20+ miles of well maintained trails running through the battlefields. Be warned that the park gates close at 6PM, so make sure you make it back in time to leave. Some great earthworks are still present in the southern part of the park. The hike to the top of Mount Kennesaw is a short 0.8 miles from the visitors center and is worth the effort in sweeping views of downtown Atlanta.
I love visiting Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park on trips to Atlanta. Many Atlantans use the park to get away from the city--on weekends I am convinced it is Georgia's largest dog park (which is the only drawback: some people don't clean up after their dogs). The rangers are very helpful, the Junior Ranger program is great for kids, and the ranger programs are entertaining and informative. The hikes are pretty easy, but well worth it for the views of Atlanta. Do keep in mind that this is a historic battlefield, so picnics and games are not allowed in the open spaces.
It is a must see, respectful site.
Civil War enthusiasts will appreciate the park’s historical monument, ruins, earthworks, and the cannon. The 11-mile round trip passes through the battlefields at Pigeon Hill and Cheatham Hill and through a 1930s CCC camp.
