“unusual, dome-like mountain range”
The Adirondack Mountains are an unusual geological formation located in the northeastern lobe of Upstate New York in the United States. The mountains rise in Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Herkimer, Lewis, St. Lawrence, Saratoga, Warren, and Washington counties. Unlike other mountain ranges that run along fault lines, the Adirondack mountains resemble a dome. They were formed by an uplift deep under the Earth's crust, about a billion years ago. They are part of the Laurentian Mountains of Canada. They are bordered on the east by Lake Champlain and Lake George, which separate them from the Green Mountains in Vermont. They are bordered to the south by the Mohawk Valley, and to the west by the Tug Hill Plateau, separated by the Black River. This region is south of the Saint Lawrence River.
Simply breathtaking. You'll find little paths and lakes all over this mountain range. You'll have as much fun driving them as you would exploring on foot. I imagine the roads do get somewhat treacherous in bad weather, so do keep an eye out if you catch yourself in adverse conditions.
Hiking and canoe heaven. The fishing here isn't as great as it used to be, big game hunting here is very challenging (hence the 4 star rating). Driving around is awesome, some of the best views you will see is on route 86 between Saranac Lake and Paul Smiths, and route 73 from Lake Placid onward to Keene & Keene Valley. Winters here are some of the coldest in the country (not uncommon to see -20 to -30 degree temperatures). I would highly recommend coming up here for peak leaf season near mid-late September!
