“Perfecting the left turn”
Where West Avenue and Vance Street connect, teenagers with racing in their blood have been perfecting their left turns since the 1960s. Turning down West to 1st Street and puling back around on the other side of the traffic circle created by pull-in parking, Kannapolis teens have been driving "Idiot Circle" to the chagrin of their parents for generations. This is where Dale Earnhart and his friends learned to perfect the left turn, and where they learned the value of quick fixes. Upon seeing a car with its front end lowered, Dale decided his should be too, so he and his friends went back to Ralph's garage, jacked up the car, pulled the front springs, cut the coils with a blow torch, and put the springs back on. They were back in Idiot Circle in under 30 minutes.
