“Comprising nearly 1,000 Acres!”

Jamaica State Park, now comprising 772 acres, was completed and opened to the public in 1969. Previously, the area had supported a few small farms and a sawmill. The West River Railroad ran through the park. The old railroad bed is now used as the trail that leads along the West River to Ball Mountain Dam. The railroad operated from about 1879 until 1927, when a flood wiped most of it out. The area at Salmon Hole, now used as the swimming area, was the site of a famous Indian Massacre in 1748. Jamaica State Park is located on a bend of the West River about one-half mile from the center of the town of Jamaica. Nearby to the north is Ball Mountain. Hamilton Falls is located about one mile up Cobb Brook, which enters the West River upstream from the park. The West River has a very large drainage area extending from Weston and the south side of Terrible Mountain to Windham on the east and Bromley on the west. Every fall, on one weekend in September, there is a water release on the West River from Ball Mountain Dam that draws whitewater paddlers to the park. The West River is also a favorite spot for many fishermen. The combination of deep slow running water and shallow fast ripples makes for some fine fishing. There are 41 tent/trailer sites and 18 lean-to sites that are spread out through the campground. Two rest rooms, complete with hot showers ($), are located in the campground. A picnic shelter and nature center are located near the picnic area and swimming hole. A hiking trail follows the West River and branches off toward Hamilton Falls.

I have visited this campground for about 12 years now a couple of times per season. The staff and volunteers are very helpful and friendly and the campsites are kept clean. The campsites that I like to stay in are along the West River and have a lean to on each site. All the campsites are very nice. The restroom buildings are well placed within the campground and the showers are pay. Wi-Fi is available only at the front gate and cell phone service is very limited.

Small campground with around 30 sites, some with lean-to's. Some sites smaller than others, well placed under the trees. Mosquitos in our location but citronella candles effective.
Reservations made on the Vermont State Park website and used campsite photos to choose site.
Easy check in at arrival. Road crosses the West river over a narrow bridge with sharp left turn into the park.
Small country store in the village of Jamaica, larger store in Townsend, further south on route 30. Great small beer store on the corner of route 30 and 100 (Rawsonville) with loads of small craft brews, mostly from Vermont.
Water spigots available and bathrooms clean. Pay shower - 50 cents for 5 minutes. It takes about 30 seconds for the hot water to arrive in the shower, recommend turning on hot water at the sink prior to the shower.
Camper next to us ran generator after hours and staff responsive. Sites exceptionally clean.
Able to see other campers but not obtrusive. Able to hear other campers only if playing loud music/talking loud. Quiet hours enforced, camp host near check in available after hours if there is a problem, but there was no problem while we were there.
Some sites with lean-to's next to West river. Play area for kids, nice beach on the river. Access to rail trail which leads to hike up mountain to a waterfall, or to the Ball Mountain dam.
No cell service (Verizon), non-secure wifi at check in area only. But received cell service during a hike at the top of the dam.

Stated in September 2023 - sites are large and offer nice privacy. Sites adjacent to the river do not have a river view unless you are in one of the lean to sites. All the trails had closures within 1/4 to 1/2 mike of the CG due to the major July floods. Bathrooms are OK - clean enough but need a bit of TLC. Women’s had only 1 shower stall which looked fine (pay by the minute). I didn’t use it as all the screens were open and a bit too chilly for me so showered in my van.
Be aware: Water spigots for fresh water are not threaded so bring a water bandit if you need to refill water tanks.
