“take a boat tour, kayak the river”

Jonathan Dickinson State Park is located just south of Stuart, this park teems with wildlife in 13 natural communities, including sand pine scrub, pine flatwoods, mangroves, and river swamps. The Loxahatchee River, Florida's first federally designated Wild and Scenic River, runs through the park. Ranger-guided tours of the 1930s pioneer homestead of Trapper Nelson are available year-round. Visitors can enjoy paved and off-road biking, equestrian, and hiking trails. Boating, canoeing, and kayaking along the river are also great ways to see the park. Anglers can fish along the riverbank or from a boat. The nature and history of the park comes to life through exhibits and displays in the Elsa Kimbell Environmental Education and Research Center. Programs for the kids, or for the whole family, are also offered here. The park also offers two full-facility campgrounds and a youth/group primitive campground. Visitors can arrange boat tours of the river and rent canoes, kayaks, and motorboats.

Located outside of Port St Lucie off of Highway 1 is Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Hobe Sound, Florida. We had no idea what to expect but were pleasantly surprised by the surrounding area. Once we settled in at the RV park we went for a drive on N. Beach Rd and down to Jupiter Island. There are jaw dropping mansions on each side that are worth a look. We stumbled upon a private marina and had to snap this photo quickly since there was a prestigious Christmas gathering going on and everyone was giving us weird stares as we walked down the road in our flip flops and t-shirts.

This park provides easy access to the nearby city of Jupiter, and all sites (in the Pine Grove campground) are full hook-up. The campground itself is close to Highway 1 so many sites have road noise. There are very few trees and therefore very little shade or privacy. Sites are all back-in, gravel, and level. But the good location and great price make it a 4-star stay for us. We liked it so much we've already returned! Cell signal is very good.

There is another campground down by the river that is currently closed for renovations.

Stayed here while our oldest had surgery in West Palm Beach. Easy access from hwy1 and I95. Less than 2 mi from gas, Publix grocery, restaurants, hardware, liquor store, etc. Clean sites, ours was across from the playground so we could watch the kids from the front porch. Full hook ups, laundry (2.50 per load), a "library", clean shower house. No vegetation so not much privacy and the sun did get hot. Road and air traffic noise was also noticeable. Fire ring and grill were available. The river campground was undergoing renovations and I look forward to trying it out. Gated and they close the park at 8pm so call ahead to get the code if you are arriving late.

The other reviews here pretty well cover our thoughts. Site 70 backs to the highway, but the noise was muted by the hillside and vegetation. I would add that there is a lot to do here. Many bike/hiking trails, great canoeing and kayaking (rentals available), a guided boat tour to a restored trapper cabin, an education center (that we didn't have time to explore), and an observation tower with great views. During World War II this was Camp Murphy, a top secret radar training facility. You can see pictures of it on display at the base of the tower pathway. If you are looking for a dinner out, we highly recommend the early bird from 5-6 at Jetty's in Jupiter. It's only 10 minutes south with great food, reasonable prices (17.95 for a full dinner) and, if you sit outside, lots of boating action. A note on pricing at the park. The overnight fee is $26, but if you reserve ahead of time at any Florida state park, there is a $6.70 reservation fee.

We only had one night at the Pine Grove Campground at Jonathan Dickenson State Park. The sites are adequately spaced with full hookups. Not a lot of shade and no real privacy, but level and spacious enough to accommodate large rigs.

What we really loved were the activities. We walked the Kitching Creek Trail and climbed the Hobe Mountain observation tower. Check out time isn’t until 1:00pm, so Rog hit the 8.6 miles of mountain bike trails in the morning while I stuck to the paved bike path – we both had an enjoyable ride. The Kimbell Visitor Center is excellent, with very friendly and informative staff. If we had more time, we would have loved to kayak the Loxahatchee River and check out other park programs/activities.

We had 4 bars of Verizon 4G, unboosted.

This park is convenient to Jupiter and the coast and my family. On another stay I endured the newer section of the park, which is nice, but I like nature. So this time I booked a site that was more tropical and was in the older section. It's a little tight back there, but I truly loved it. The restrooms were dated, but I think they are renovating them soon. There are many things to do at this park. You can swim ( keep eyes out for gators), you can canoe, hike and climb a tower that allows you to see for miles. There are more things to do that you can find on the website. I had much fun with family at this park. My site was grassy/sandy but level. I will return.

We stayed at this park for a week in November 2017 for the sole purpose of visiting family in the area, but we also took advantage of several park amenities including canoeing and hiking. We loved our stay, including star-gazing in relatively dark skies (for South Florida) during the Leonid meteor shower and canoeing from the park boat launch to the Trapper Nelson interpretive site.

The camping fee includes entry to the park. Check-in was easy -- pull into the large parking area to the north of the ranger station to get registered and receive an entry pass and gate code for after hours entry. Be aware that the Pine Grove Campground is located over 4 miles east of the river landing, so kayaking / canoeing requires driving down to the boat launch area from the campground. The Pine Grove campground is also very close to the park entry along US1, so there is some road noise, but as urban dwellers we were very satisfied with the peace and quiet.

The Pine Grove campground is recently renovated, with two loops and four separate bathhouses. Each site is well-equipped with 30 & 50 amp power, water, sewer, posts for hammocks / gear, fire pit, grill and picnic table. Sites are nice fine gravel and relatively level. Site separation is OK, but not great. The recent renovations mean there are no mature trees, but shrubs are growing in. In a few years the sites will have much more privacy. The best sites are on the outside of the loops. These have easier access and more privacy, and based on the growth of the shrubs the top sites for privacy currently are 25, 27, 73 and 76 (see photos).

The bathhouses were adequate and very clean. Laundry machines are available, but currently priced at $2.50 per wash or dry. We have reservations to come back next year thanks to the nearby family, but we're already looking forward to our next stay already as a result of this great visit.

This is a very nice state park campground. We stayed in the full hookup Pine Grove loop. The sites were a little close together compared to most other state parks we've stayed at, but we never felt crowded, and it's certainly much better spacing than most commercial RV Parks. There are no mature trees, so there's little privacy within the campground. Because of the way the loops are curved, there are some sites (all are back-ins) with extremely long pads (100'), and others that are very short and close to the road. We found some good places to walk the dog near the campground, and there are more trails at the other end of the park, 4 miles away. Cell service was good, and it was a short drive to stores and restaurants in either Jupiter (south) or Hobe Sound (north). If you're staying a while, mail and packages can be received at the campground office. There is a gate at the entrance. If arriving late, call ahead for the gate code. Given the low price for full hookups, this is a great value and someplace we'll look at returning to in the future.

We've been here more times than we can count. We've been camping at JD for years and it's always been our favorite park. Both campgrounds have nice, clean sites and the park is filled with recreational opportunities. The Camp Murphy mountain bike trails are some of the best in the state!!!

Verizon and AT&T are both suitable for remote work with fast speeds and reliable connection.

The Pine Grove campground suited for large rigs. The sites are large and open. There is no privacy but it is easy access for even the largest rigs. Full hookup, level sites and fire rings. The bathrooms are clean and updated. There is a washer/dryer at each of the bathhouses. There is a lot of road noise at Pine Grove because you are right on US1.

The River campground is suited for smaller rigs and tent camping. Water and electric only. The river campground was recently remodeled. It's nicer, but the sites are not as private as they used to be.

Jonathan Dickinson State Park will absolutely spoil you with its oversized spots. The restrooms are always spotless! The rangers are available and helpful! We try to stay at least 3-4 times a year, but because of its popularity, it is very difficult reserving a spot during the winter months. The summer months are so hot in Florida and the hurricanes in 2004-2005 wiped out most of the trees so the shade is minimal.

I HIGHLY recommend this Park!!
