We took a short day trip from Charleston to Hilton Head and this refuge was the one redeeming quality of the trip. Hilton Head was filthy, overcrowded, and offered nothing in the way of being a unique experience. How many golf courses does one island need?
We decided to stop off in the refuge on our way back and we weren't disappointed. It was quiet, with minimal traces of humanity which is what you'd want and expect in this type of park. We explored the trails, took a bunch of pictures, got to get in touch with nature. We happened across a number of alligators, birds, armadillos, all sorts of animals. This is a hidden little nugget in an otherwise mess of a trip to Hilton Head.
