Confirmed by 1 users | Last reported on July 18, 2023For around $30 per night we stayed at Savage near mile 14 inside the park. This is a great ‘get your feet wet’ base camp. Chat up the rangers at the visitor’s center, take in the short hikes near the park entrance and spend some time at the moose & elk viewing hot spot just a few miles down the road. The larger RV spots are pull-through but narrow. We were secluded in our site and couldn’t see another camper on any side which was lovely. There are lots of trees but we found several sites that weren’t completely surrounded. So, if it’s sunny and you have solar you may be able to charge your batteries.

The Savage River Campground provided us with what we look for in an ideal campground- quiet, ease of access, level sites, and lots of wildlife. We had a pull-through site on A Loop (first come, first serve) with a view of Mt. Denali out our windshield. It was an easy walk to the start of the Savage Alpine Trail and to the Mountain Vista trailhead. Be very aware that this particular campground is a popular place for moose to hang out. We had one just feet from our picnic table at one point (we had moved indoors by then). The rangers say that it is the most dangerous place in the park for them to run sled dogs what with all the moose. Also, if you're up for a strenuous trail, definitely do the Savage Alpine Trail from the campground and catch a bus back. The views are spectacular!

We had a great stay here- booked into an ‘A’ site and had no trouble finding one that would work for our 32 ft fifth wheel. Oddly there are some A sites in the B loop, they’re marked. Water available, but specifically states not for filling RV tanks. Great hikes eighth from camp, easy drive to front of park for other hikes and the visitor center. We didn’t see any wildlife in camp. Saw Denali one day, otherwise it was under cloud cover. We stayed 3 nights, felt like we were able to do almost all the hikes we wanted to in the area. Nice ranger talks every night at 730.
