“popular perch for eagles”
Poxono Island is a popular perching place for eagles. It is possible to spot Bald Eagle year-round thanks to the abundance of prey along the waterway. Brave the winter chill for waterfowl views. Black Duck, a favorite eagle meal, Common Merganser and Common Goldeneye all utilize the river in winter. Look for a Bald Eagle catching a ride downriver on one of the ice floes. River viewing also offers other raptor sightings, as well as a change of venue, by season. Great Blue Heron, Wood Duck, Bufflehead, Spotted and Solitary Sandpipers, Common Loon, Great Egret and Killdeer are just a few of the possibilities to be seen as seasons revolve. The open river may allow good views of mammals such as beaver and river otter, especially in early morning and early evening hours.
