“believed to be the oldest existing jail structure in the state”
Directly behind the courthouse, this granite structure has two foot thick walls, two stories and a trap door above the entry. Condemned prisoners were hung above the trap door and dropped to their death. The building has remained virtually unchanged with its castellated roof-line, sloping stone walls, and fortress-like appearance since its completion in 1807. It is believed to be the oldest existing jail structure in the state. The cells are veritable dungeons without light or ventillation except for the grated doors downstairs and the small grated windows above. The jail was used until the 1890's.
Was neat but we arrived during the week and the history museum was not open. Would have been nice to go inside. But nice quick stop in a downtown area with lots of shops to browse.
Nice little history stop. We were there at 8:30 though so didn’t get to check out the museum I read about.
the navigation from roadtrippers app took us a block over. Found it neat place several historical signs around the Court house.
Cool building and history. Museum's hours are Sat 11a-2p.
Stopped here to snap a few photos and see this historical structure for ourselves. It was locked up, not very "entertaining" but still neat to see. Fascinating place to see off of the beaten path, just minutes from I-20.
