“By way of a canoe”
Way of the Wilderness is by way of a canoe. From history we know that for over 300 years canoes have been the means of transportation in this vast wilderness. Centuries ago the Indians traveled these endless waterways in birch bark canoes. In 1660 white men began to explore here and the great fur trade began. The canoe became a freighter carrying the furs out, and the supplies in for the happy Voyageurs who became skilled at running the highways of streams, lakes and rivers. After years of this use, the canoe became known to the sportsman who ventured beyond and discovered what is now the greatest canoe country in all the world. The area is still a true, unspoiled, primitive wilderness.
