“Campground, Shooting Range, Off-roading”
The Cove is a fantastic campground that's rather out of the way near Winchester, VA. The camping is a little more expensive than state parks, but you're offered your choice of quiet seclusion or a "more spirited" camping experience. Yes, this is a place where you can go and get hammered around a fire, wake up the next day, and go off-roading. After the 4WD adventure, you can use the free, extremely permissive (but well-managed by a dedicated RSO) rifle range. What's special about this range is that unlike most, you can shoot just about anything you want at just about anything you want. It's a 100m range of flat, level ground with steel targets at 75 and 100m. You can bring pumpkins, tannerite, soccer balls, or iron skillets to shoot safely. It's a refreshing change from some local ranges. The camping, as I mentioned, can be quiet or hilariously communally drunk, depending on which loop you camp on. The family that runs the place will direct you accordingly, since they're rarely full up. RV hookups are available, they rent boats, the lakes are gorgeous, and it's a really nice resort for a certain type of camper. Do not expect white linens, but do expect a courteous, helpful crew to take care of your needs.

Ratings Summary
The Cove is a beautiful area, remote for the East, forested with a lovely big pond. However, it was quite a drive in on a dirt road; it was challenging to find a level spot for our teardrop camper; it was a bit of a hike to haul a bucket of water; and the water wasn't running the morning we left, so no dishwashing and no shower.
