“Will it really kill you?”

Georgia is home to its fair share of bizarre landmarks. There's the mysterious conspiracy magnets referred to as the Georgia Guidestones, or the abandoned Dungeness Ruins, to name a few. One of the strangest roadside wonders, though, is "the haunted pillar", known for killing those unfortunate enough to touch it. Waymarking The Haunted Pillar, a lonely chunk of stone on Fifth and Broad street, is all that remains of a farmers market that once stood in downtown Augusta, Georgia. The market stood there for nearly half a century, from 1830 to 1878, when it was violently destroyed by a tornado. After the disaster, the lone pillar started to develop some very strange stories, particularly one stating that anyone who attemps to move, destroy, or even touch the pillar will die shortly thereafter. Spooky.. . Mags on the Move The legend says that the pillar's murderous curse was places by a local minster who was denied to the right to preach on the corner near the farmers market, and as his was hauled away declared that "a great wind would destroy the place except for one pillar and that whoever tried to remove this remaining pillar would be struck dead." Apparently, his warning came true. Of course, the locals might be hiding a thing or two about the pillar. From North of the Savannah: Strangely enough, the pillar we see today is neither ‘real’ nor is it in the original spot. It was destroyed in 1935 in an automobile incident. The column was rebuilt by local business owners, and a year later was moved to the corner of 5th and Broad street, where it can be seen today. Friday the 13th, 1958, a cotton bale fell off a passing truck and knocked the pillar over. It was quickly re-erected. No one was injured on the truck or on the construction crew. That we know of, anyway. So, it would seem that the curse might not be true. But hey, you can go visit it and test the theory for yourself. Let us know how it goes...
