Fourth largest hydraulic-filled earthen dam in the world. Interpretive center chronicles construction and features displays of dinosaur fossils and taxidermy of local animals. From Memorial Day to end of September, tours of the powerhouse are led hourly, and by appointment out-of-season.
Enjoyable detour off Highway 2 - the size of the dam is something else. Stopped in the interpretive center and got the low-down - great pictures, stories, and personal memoirs of folks who worked on the dam. We hadn't called to get an appointment to tour the powerhouse - make sure you do that! The neighboring town of Fort Peck was pretty nice also - originally worker housing in the 30s during dam construction. Lots of original CCC structures in good shape. From the interpretive center, drive up to the dam and then 3 miles east to see the spillway, then back over the dam. Great stop.
