“A Rich, Natural History”
The 1,125-acre Caledonia State Park is in Adams and Franklin counties, midway between Chambersburg and Gettysburg along the Lincoln Highway, US 30. The park is nestled within South Mountain, the northern terminus of the well-known Blue Ridge Mountain of Maryland and Virginia. Within South Mountain there are four state parks and 84,000 acres of state forest land waiting to be explored and enjoyed. The soils on either side of South Mountain are ideal for fruit production, proven by the abundance of orchards in the surrounding area. While Thaddeus Stevens fought for abolition in Washington DC, Caledonia Iron Works furnace foreman William Hammett was a conductor for the Underground Railroad. Hammett would meet a conductor near Pond Bank and guide run-away slaves north to Greenwood, just west of the park, to meet the next conductor on the journey to freedom. For this, and Stevens’ tireless fight for equal rights, Caledonia State Park is a Path of Freedom site. During the Gettysburg Campaign of the American Civil War, the confederate cavalry of General J.A. Early raided throughout southern Pennsylvania but followed a policy to destroy no private property or industry. The cavalry burned and pillaged Caledonia. Early explained his actions, “Mr. Stevens is an enemy of the South. He is in favor of confiscating their property and arming the Negroes. His property must be destroyed.” The Confederate army marched through the ruins of Caledonia on their way to the Battle of Gettysburg, then retreated back the same way, followed by the Union army. With money from Stevens and the help of the Ahl brothers, Cumberland County ironmen, furnace manager John Sweeney rebuilt the furnace and forge, which continued to operate at a reduced capacity until 1870.

Confirmed by 1 users | Last reported on April 17, 2023Easy to get to, but If you like to camp at RV dealerships, go to Hosack Run in Caledonia State Park. Whoever runs this place must be from New York City, my "site" had two other campers, one on each side. The trailer one one side was so close they could not extend their slide out because it would cover my picnic table! The only reason the trailer on the other side did not do the same was because of a tree in the way. The facilities were poorly maintained and not anything approaching clean. The only thing I will EVER do with this campground is Run, RUN AWAY. Gave it one star because no stars was not an option. I would have had more room at Walmart.

While there are some spots that have a few pads clustered together, most are single clearings. The pads clustered in groups of three seem to be areas cleared for the larger rigs, or perhaps a group that wants to camp together. They offer concrete, gravel and dirt spots in various lengths. No tv reception and cell service is hit or miss. Bathrooms are small with only 4 shower stalls. Dump site located at park entrance and water is available in the park. Various hiking trails and some great scenery. 13 miles to Gettysburg, inexpensive place to stay near the military park.

We were there on sept so it was pretty quiet. Most sites were roomy enough. I’ve been in bigger, Ive been in tighter sites. Most were also level enough. The bathrooms were marginal. It was only 15 minutes to Gettysburg, so this was a great overnight stop for us and met our needs.

Update--we called and the Park Staff said they would give us a full refund for selling us access to a site that is really only usable for tent camping (at this time). Thanks for doing that.
Luckily we live only 2.5 hours away--we just went home because this is the height of the season and there wasn't anything available anywhere else. Camp Hosts were lovely folks--they told us this site has been unusable by RVs and Travel Trailers for a while now, and they've told Park management about it. We'll see if Pennsylvania refunds our $100+ that we wasted driving there for no reason. Very frustrating. That being said, it was 96 degrees in Washington, D.C. and when we got to Caledonia it was 82. We were looking forward to this, but hey, stuff happens.

This was our 2nd time here and it was better than our first. The campground has been renovated since our last stay with much of the work being done at the Chinquapin Hill area which is where we were. Site was ok and has 50 amp electric hookup. You can hear Route 30 traffic. The pool is pay per use and there are trails for hiking and at least one stream that runs through the park. If I remember correctly, it is one of the oldest state parks.

Join us on a video tour of Caledonia State Park in Pennsylvania; video uploaded here on Campendium for your immediate reference. We take you to the Caledonia State Park picnic and day use areas, and both the Chinquapin Hill Campground and Hosack Run Campground. Caledonia State Park is centrally located within the Michaux State Forest and is just 16.3 miles from Gettysburg National Military Park Visitor Center via US Route 30. The Appalachian Trail bisects the park. A dump station with fresh water fill is available at each of the aforementioned campgrounds. Verizon and AT&T cellular service were too weak to measure upload and download speeds. Voice only service was either intermittent or nonexistent throughout the park.
Very clean park. Lots of easy hiking can be done. Nice walk from hosack run campground (pet friendly) to main park. Site 183 is very level.

Site 168 in the Hosak Run loop where pets are allowed. It is on a slope and a curve with a tree on one side and drop off on the other. Needed several leveling blocks to make it work and there were some washout ruts around the site. It is very close to the next site, which thankfully was vacant for our stay. No water at this but it looked like others had it. The bathhouse seemed recently updated and was one of the cleanest and nicest we experienced. There is wifi at the park office. The park is really nice and we enjoyed hiking right from our campsite and spending a little time on the AT.
