The Evans City Cemetery and the borough became popularly known as the place where the 1968 horror film Night of the Living Dead was filmed. The film's director, George A. Romero, also shot his 1973 film The Crazies in and around Evans City. The small budget dictated much of the production process. According to Hardman, "We knew that we could not raise enough money to shoot a film on a par with the classic horror films with which we had all grown up. The best that we could do was to place our cast in a remote spot and then bring the horror to be visited on them in that spot".[10] Scenes were filmed near Evans City, Pennsylvania, 30 miles (48 km) north of Pittsburgh in rural Butler County; the opening sequence was shot at the Evans City Cemetery on Franklin Road, south of the borough. The interior upstairs scenes were filmed in a downtown Evans City home that later became the offices of a prominent local physician and family doctor (Allsop). This home is still standing on South Washington St. (locally called Mars-Evans City Road), between the intersecting streets of South Jackson and Van Buren. The chapel in this cemetery is under warrant for demolition. However, Gary R. Steiner is currently raising money to restore the building, and stop the demolition.
Be careful, ghouls--police stay on high alert and regularly cruise into the cemetery to hassle folks wandering around taking photos leaning against Nicholas Kramer's gravestone. They'll just kick you out, though. Also, be respectful as it is a cemetery.
If you're a fan of the old movie, you'll love checking this place out. It is a bit out of the way (remember that winding road from the beginning of the film?) but well worth it. Though there were some workers there, I didn't run into any trouble. They didn't pay any attention to me as I snapped the requisite photos. Can't hurt to be careful (and certainly, be respectful) but I wouldn't worry too much. Have fun!
Awesome place!!! The George A. Romero museum is right in the center of town and is also a must see!!
you are actually looking for evans city cemetery. turn off of main st at the railroad tracks onto Pioneer Rd/Franklin Rd and it will be on your left. just past the railroad tracks on main street is the new living dead museum/gift shop.
Definitely worth a side trip if you’re a fan. To get to the graves used in the movie, turn left immediately after the little chapel building and they will be on your right after you pass the first intersection.
I was in the cemetery for over half an hour and never encountered police. Just be respectful and they can't kick you out for being in a public place.
It is, however, cool to find the right gravestones. The main ones are towards the front, so start your search there.
