“learn the history of North Carolina”
The Albemarle is a unique place—half land, half water. The Museum of the Albemarle interprets the cultural history of this region, now comprised of 13 northeastern North Carolina counties: Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Northampton, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Tyrrell and Washington. The Albemarle Region, surrounds one of the world’s largest freshwater sounds and is named for George Monck, an English general who aided Charles II in reclaiming the British throne. In exchange for this service, King Charles bestowed on Monck the title of “Duke of the Albemarle” and granted him the land of Carolina—North and South Carolina and lower Virginia. Come and experience the Madrin Gallery as it tells "Our Story," the history of the Albemarle area. The 6,200 square foot exhibit is a showcase of over 700 artifacts that depict the story of the Albemarle region’s watermen, farmers, lifesavers, and soldiers.
