Confirmed by 4 users | Last reported on May 31, 2023We were visiting family in the Chicago suburbs and wanted to stay as close to them as possible. The campground at Burnidge Forest Preserve / Paul Wolff Campground was the perfect place. We had a huge pull-thru site, a bit unlevel but we made it work.
There are two RV loops offering 50 amp electric service. All 89 sites are paved. One loop is nestled amongst mature trees offering lots of shade. We stayed in the open meadow loop. Water spigots are scattered throughout the grounds and you're able to hook up to one if close enough.
There's 10 walk-in tent sites with lots of privacy. No shower facilities on the property. There are two dump stations.
Lots of nearby shopping including farm stands. The Metra train station is only ten minutes away (Big Timber Road stop) allowing one to enjoy the city of Chicago without the hassle of driving. Interested in seeing Chicago but concerned about driving an RV in the crazy traffic? This is a great place to camp. Quiet, safe, and easy to get to without the hassle of traffic.

I used to live not too far from this campground, so whenever I am back to Chicago visiting friends and family, this is my first-choice destination. Burnidge Forest Preserve (Paul Wolff CG) is just a couple of miles off of I-90 and a new hospital and lots of shopping/dining options are nearby. There's also a Metra Rail station (Big Timber Rd) where you can catch a commuter train into downtown Chicago. TV and internet access are fantastic here-- no problems at all.
But what draws me to this place are the walking/biking trails and nature itself. The older section of the campground is set beneath large old oak trees. The newer sunny section sits on the edge of a large prairie brimming with lots of birds and butterflies.
The sites here are generally quite large (especially in the new section), and each site is paved and comes with a picnic table, and electric hookups. Water hookups are shared between sites so make sure you have a long hose (or fill before you park). There are no sewer hookups but the park has 2 nice dump stations.
As of my 2015 stay, this park does not take reservations (which is a great thing for us full-timers who can pull in on a weekday and easily get a site for up to 14 days at a time). Weekends at this CG are often packed solid with locals.
There are only a couple minor drawbacks to this great park-- the older section of the campground is near freight train tracks, so there can be some train noise at times for those sites. About 1/3rd of the sites are quite sloped and will be easier for trailers than motorhomes.

Pretty campground, has everything we needed - electric 20, 30 and 50, water hookups, free dumping if you're a guest, bathrooms. $15 for locals, $25 for out of towners. 50 feet between sites. Some are shaded.
There are 10 forest preserves within 10 miles, some cute towns somewhat nearby, especially St. Charles and Geneva.

Second summer visiting here because of family in the area. Large campground with two loops and several walk in tent sites. The first loop has some shady spots and the second is wide open. West facing sites in that area can be brutal in the summer heat. Water and 30/50 electric at all sites - some pull thrus but most back in. Most water hook ups are shared with two sites. However some sites in the middle of the first loop seem to have multiple sites to a single hook up and have to go quite a distance. So avoid those unless you have a couple of long hoses. No reservations but lots of sites available during the week. It was jammed, though, on the weekend. No showers. Lots of traffic in the area but not too far from I90 if you don’t mind the tolls. Great Verizon coverage without needing a booster. Gave it 4 stars for the lack of amenities (e.g. showers) given the price. We’ll be back.

This campground is run by Kane County and it is awesome. There is water and electric but no sewer. The water spigots are far from the sites so you may need some extra hose if you want to stay connected and not fill. This was about one hour northwest of Chicago and there is train station nearby that will take you into the city. This park is very clean and the camp hosts were some of the best. It rained quite a bit when we were there and the campground had great drainage, too. There are not a lot of places to stay in the Chicago area and I assume this is the best.
Lou Malnati's is a much try pizza place in Chicagoland. Be sure to ask for the butter crust :).

I'm from the western suburbs, so it was great to be able to stay in a nice public campground close to family and friends. Only downside is there are no showers, which is tough in a small rig with no sewer hook ups available on the sites. Lovely grounds and nice hiking trails.

Great place to stop for an overnight. First come first serve, and lots of spots left when we rolled in past 7pm on a Sunday. Lots of mosquitoes so beware! Vault toilets were closed because of covid. Flush toilets very clean. Hookups for electric and water at most sites. Fire pits. Firewood for sale, $5. Easy in and out. Free dump station if you camp. Lots of little trails we didn’t have time to explore. Overall a perfect spot for us as a stopover! Wouldn’t mind staying a couple nights. Sites are spacious, but no privacy.

Beautiful park that is first come first serve. We came on a Monday and was told to go and choose our site...set up and then come back to the office to pay. Camp hosts very friendly and helpful. Lots of sites available with long cement pads and grass between each. Very quiet and we had a large open field behind us. Water spigots are shared by 2 sites so have extra hose in case it is needed.
We are FullTimers with a 35ft 5th wheel and had plenty of room to unhook and park our truck.
Walmart and Meijer stores less than 10 miles away.

Spaces are large, cell coverage is good. No sewer, but multiple dump spots for your honey wagon. Great walking paths, cheap firewood.
